Describe yourself in three words: Loyal. Driven. Compassionate.
Where are you from? Have you lived anywhere interesting? I was born in Rexburg, ID and lived in the city of Driggs, about 50 miles east of Rexburg and just over the mountains from Jackson Hole. My dad passed away when I was just a couple years old, so my mother, brothers and I moved to Flagstaff, AZ shortly after to be closer to her parents. After graduating from high school, I chose to serve a two-year mission for my church and was assigned to work in Rosario, Argentina. I lived in various cities during those two years and learned to speak fluent Spanish.
Briefly describe your professional history and how you arrived at Phillips 66: I consider myself a “merger baby,” joining ConocoPhillips when I first started my career. My wife and three kids at the time had moved to Arizona so I could go to MBA night school at Arizona State University. Before I finished my first semester, a temp agency reached out to me to see if I wanted a job at Phillips 66, which was in the process of merging with Conoco. A few months later, they hired me on full time, and we as a family moved to Houston. I never finished my MBA, and the rest is history.
What’s one work-related project you’re most proud of and why? One work-related project that I’m most proud of is when I managed our 24/7 Help Desk. I lead an effort to redefine the culture within this group. I involved the supervisors and every Help Desk agent to define what we were going to be all about and how we can all work together successfully. Cultivating an inclusive environment was key, and I enjoyed involving everyone and allowing their voices to be heard.
What’s your favorite Phillips 66-related memory? One year, I had my mid-year review outside during the annual AirVenture show in Oshkosh, WI. I had a clear view of the exciting acrobatic air show conducted by the Aerostars, and it was an incredible experience, not to mention a fun location for my mid-year review! I would highly recommend AirVenture to anyone who has not attended before.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? My chocolate chip cookies have become quite famous at the Phillips 66 Aviation office so I continue to enjoy baking them and bringing them for my team. I also like hiking, photography, going out to eat with my family, and spending time with my extended family since we now live closer to them. When it comes to vacations, my wife, myself and our five kids enjoy going to the beach and relaxing near the water.
What was your last vacation? Our last vacation was in Newport Beach, CA with our close friends and their kids. We spent the days on the beach and the nights eating good food and playing games. We had lots of laughs, enjoying the incredible views this well-known beach has to offer.
What’s your next vacation? My wife and I will be heading to Kauai, HI to celebrate our 25th anniversary!
Do you have a hidden talent? Most people do not know this, but one of my hidden talents is cross stitching. We display a few of my creations in our house and people always assume my wife created them. It’s a fun skill that I’ve grown to love.
